Privacy policy

Vicana is an app for learning Spanish by talking with characters in a village. This policy explains what data the app and this website use, why, and the choices you have. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Vicana ("we", "us") makes the Vicana app and runs vicana.app. You can reach us at support@vicana.app.
The short version
- Your voice is never saved. It's streamed so your neighbour can hear you and answer.
- Your learning progress lives on your phone.
- Transcripts of your calls are saved so you can reread them, and you can delete them at any time.
- Purchases go through Apple or Google. We never see your card.
- This website uses no cookies and no analytics.
Your account
When you open the app, it creates an anonymous account for you: a random identifier, with no name, email or phone number needed. If you choose to add an email to keep your account, we store that email to sign you in.
The name you choose in the app is used by the neighbours when they talk to you, so it's sent with each call.
Calls and practice
When you talk to a neighbour, your voice is streamed to our speech provider, Deepgram. Deepgram turns your speech into text, a language model from Anthropic writes the neighbour's reply, and Deepgram turns the reply into speech. To do this, the conversation is shared with them: what you say, your name in the app, your level and what you're practising. They process it on our behalf to provide the service, under their data terms.
When you practise a phrase, a short recording is sent once to check how clearly it came through. Neither the app nor our servers store recordings: your last few tries stay in your phone's memory so you can play them back, and they're gone when you close the app.
What's saved, and where
- On our servers, under your anonymous account: the transcripts of your calls, so you can reread them, and the usage we need to run your plan fairly, such as when you last called. Our database provider is Supabase.
- On your phone: your learning progress (phrases, chapters, voice-note results and weekly checks) and your settings. They leave your phone only if you choose to share them.
Subscriptions
Plus is bought through Apple's App Store or Google Play. We never see your payment details. We use RevenueCat to know whether your account has Plus: it receives your anonymous account identifier and your purchase history from the store.
If you arrived through an ad, RevenueCat may tell that ad platform that a trial or purchase happened, using an identifier for this app only, so ads can be measured. We don't ask for permission to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and we don't collect an identifier that would allow it.
Reminders
Practice reminders and the reminder before a free trial ends are scheduled on your phone. You can turn them off in the app or in your phone's settings.
Diagnostics
If the app breaks, it may send us a crash report, with personal details and message contents removed.
This website
vicana.app uses no cookies, no analytics and no trackers, and loads nothing from other companies. Our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs, including IP addresses, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
Why we can use your data
If you live in the UK or the EU: we use data to provide the app you asked for (performance of a contract), to keep it working and secure and to measure our ads in a limited way (our legitimate interests), and to meet legal obligations. Where the law requires your consent, we ask for it first.
Young learners
Vicana is for people aged 14 and over. Where the law requires it, younger teenagers need a parent's permission to use it. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 14. If you think a child has used the app, contact us and we'll delete their data.
Keeping and deleting data
Transcripts stay until you delete them, in the app under Me, then Privacy, then Delete all transcripts. Your account stays while you use the app. To delete your account and everything linked to it, follow the steps on Delete your account. We do it within 30 days. Apple, Google and RevenueCat keep purchase records as the law requires.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask to see, correct, delete or export your data, or object to how we use it. Email support@vicana.app and we'll answer within 30 days. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
Where your data is processed
Our providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. They do so under their data protection terms, with safeguards such as standard contractual clauses where the law requires them.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update this page and tell you in the app before the change applies.
